Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) signed an agreement to purchase energy produced by a biomass-powered generation facility that is under development in Ookala. The project is being developed by Tradewinds Forest Products LLC and Rockland Capital Energy Investments and will be part of a veneer mill: the generating unit is engineered so to be powered by scrap wood from the veneer operation. HELCO is going purchase about three megawatts of electricity under this deal, still to be approved by the state Public Utilities Commission.
